Assignment 1: Area Selection

Due: 9/6, 10am (Thu)

What do I do?

Choose a research area for the purpose of this course (you are free to select a different area for your research career!).
We provide you with the list of areas and a top conference for each area. You should browse through the recent program of conferences that interest you from the given list.

Submit a max-500 word essay describing (i) why you chose that area and (ii) the research trend you noticed from the conference.
Your submission will be posted on class website.

    Assignment 2: Paper Selection

    Due: 9/18, 10am (Tue)

    What do I do?

    From the research area and corresponding conference you selected in Assignment #1, choose a paper that excites you the most.

    Submit (i) a max-500 word essay describing why you chose that paper, why you think it’s a good paper, major contributions of the paper, your critique, etc., and (ii) PDF of the paper.
    Your submission will be posted on class website.

    Assignment 3: Rewriting the abstract

    Due: 9/27, 10am (Thu)

    What do I do?

    Re-write (not revise) the abstract of the paper you selected in Assignment #2.
    In your submission, include the title and author information of the paper, the original abstract, and your abstract.


    Some of your writings will be discussed in the writing workshop.

    Assignment 4: Reviewing Papers

    First Review Due: 11/6, 10am (Tue)

    Second Review Due: 11/20, 10am (Tue)

    What do I do?

    Write constructive review of the assigned papers as a TPC member.
    The papers you review will also be reviewed by other TPC members, and you will participate in the discussion of the papers during the mock TPC meeting.

    Assignment 5: Writing a resume

    Due: 11/13, 10am (Tue)

    What do I do?

    Write a customized resume for a specific job posting. Please submit the PDF of your resume (preferably 1-page; 2-pages max), and the job posting you're applying for. Note that this assignment does not give extra credit for LaTeX users.
    Note that, while the job postings require various documents, you are only expected to write and submit your résumé.
